Spring Grants Available:
David Wiitanen & Slim McLean Memorial Youth Hockey Fund
Grants from this fund support youth ice hockey programs throughout Houghton and Keweenaw counties. Such support may include, but not be limited to, financial assistance for the operation and maintenance of skating facilities; the support of hockey and referee instructional programs for youth of all ages; the support of hockey equipment procurement or exchange programs; registration fee assistance for those individuals who, because of a family economic situation, would otherwise be unable to participate in junior hockey activities; and the support of local junior hockey team participation in state or national tournaments. Approximately $3,000 available.
Joe Freed Empowerment Fund
Joseph D. Freed was a nurse for Copper Country Mental Health, specializing in caring for individuals with disabilities. Helping hands, loving heart, and giving spirit were Joe’s core values. Until his unexpected death after a brief illness in 2018, he enjoyed celebrating everyone and encouraging them to live life to the fullest. He believed individuals who feel good about themselves thrive. He believed when people have freedom and are empowered, they can live life to the fullest. The mission of the Joe Freed Empowerment Fund is to empower persons with disabilities.
The Joe Freed Empowerment Fund Grant supports projects that promote a cultural shift toward greater empowerment of individuals with mental and/or intellectual or developmental disabilities, with proposals targeting transportation barriers given priority. Approximately $9,000 available.
Kellogg Youth Endowment Fund
Grants will be awarded to organizations with programs and projects that benefit youth in Keweenaw and Houghton Counties. This grant award will be deliberated on and decided by our Youth Advisory Council, to ensure that youth have a chance to participate in the decisions that affect them. Approximately $10,000 available.
