YAC HistorY
In 1992, the trustees of the Community Foundation for Keweenaw and Houghton Counties (now Keweenaw Area Community Foundation) created the Youth Advisory Council in response to a challenge issued by the Kellogg Foundation. The Kellogg Foundation’s contribution of $500,000 to the Keweenaw Area Community Foundation formed the Kellogg Youth Endowment - to be managed for and by youth in Houghton and Keweenaw Counties.
Today, over 1,500 young people are serving on 86 youth grant-making committees statewide. Endowment fund assets exceed $62 million and collectively award $1.5 million in grants annually. The KCF Kellogg Youth Endowment Fund group has granted nearly $300,000 in funds since its inception. To learn more about YAC programs in Michigan, visit the Council of Michigan Foundations Youth Philanthropy webpage.
The Keweenaw Community Foundation remains committed to involving youth in grant-making and leadership and continues to provide the opportunity for students to engage in philanthropy, leadership, and service as part of the YAC.
