Next Heartland’s Update August 21st
We hope you’ll join The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for our next Heartlands Update on Wednesday, Aug. 21, at the Grant Township Hall, 220 Gratiot St. in Copper Harbor, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. TNC and DNR will provide updates on the Keweenaw Heartlands Project and field questions from attendees.
This Heartlands Update kicks off Heart the Heartlands, a series of six events that will get us out into the Heartlands forest as summer turns to fall. On Thursday, Aug. 22, TNC and the Keweenaw Hiking Trails Association are co-hosting a hike up Mt. Baldy, which offers sweeping views of the Keweenaw Heartlands. The hike, from 3:00-6:00 p.m., is rigorous at times. We recommend wearing sturdy hiking shoes and bringing water and a snack. Register for this event here.
On Saturday, Aug. 24, TNC will host a guided hike of our Mary McDonald Preserve at Horseshoe Harbor from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Shaped by the waves of Lake Superior, Mary MacDonald is TNC’s most visited preserve. Home to 11 threatened or rare species, this preserve offers stunning views of the lake and a unique landscape carved by waves and wind. During the hike, you’ll not only learn more about this preserve but also hear a bit about the nearby Keweenaw Heartlands project. Register for this event here.
TNC is planning additional events in the coming weeks to offer opportunities to experience Keweenaw Heartlands firsthand. Find the just-right event for you on this Heart the Heartlands event series poster.
Survey Says?
We thank those who provided feedback on the Keweenaw Heartlands Messaging Survey. More than 100 people filled out the survey hosted by TNC and the Keweenaw Community Foundation and spent an average of 20 minutes doing so. We learned a lot about how best to message this project, and we appreciate your time and thoughtful and candid responses. The survey is now closed. We will share more information on the survey results next month.
