Keweenaw Community Foundation Announces Fall 2024 Grant Recipients

The Keweenaw Community Foundation is pleased to announce the recipients of its Fall 2024 Field of Interest Grants. These grants, totaling $63,050, support various programs and projects that address community needs and opportunities in Houghton and Keweenaw Counties.

The Field of Interest grant program is designed to support specific causes, populations, or geographic areas, reflecting the unique passions and interests of the donors who established each fund. The Fall 2024 grant cycle opened on September 1, 2024, and closed on October 21, 2024.

The recipients for the Fall 2024 grant cycle are as follows:

Community Impact Fund ($7,500 awarded):

  • 31 Backpacks: Ongoing Weekly Deliveries

  • Copper Country Angel Mission: Coat the Copper Countr

  • Keweenaw Queers: Keweenaw Pridefest 

  • Michigan Arts Access: Club Create Copper Country 

  • Portage Lake District Library: Expanding Diversity Initiatives at PLDL

Kellogg Youth Endowment Fund ($10,000 awarded):

  • Portage Lake District Library: Expanding Diversity Initiatives at PLDL

  • Simple Kindness for Youth: SKY Grants 

  • 31 Backpacks: Ongoing Weekly Deliveries 

  • Ahmeek Village Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department: Christmas for the Children 

  • Kaleidoscope: STEAM Saturdays 

  • Keweenaw Family Resource Center: Diaper Closet

  • Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts: Sponsoring Muppet Christmas Carol family holiday party 

Copper Shores Community Wellness and Outdoor Recreation Fund ($40,000 awarded):

  • Copper Country Ski Tigers: Ski Equipment 

  • Keweenaw Land Trust: ADA Accessible Maintenance Initiative 

  • Swedetown Trails Club: Creating ADA Parking Spaces, Sidewalk, and Connecting Path to Universal Access Trail

  • Third Coast Diving and Adaptive Recreation: Copper Country SCUBA Discovery and Adaptive Diving 

  • Village of Laurium: Get Active Initiative: Splashing Through Laurium 

Keweenaw Cross Country Skiing Fund ($2,500 awarded):

  • Copper Country Ski Tigers: Ski Equipment

  • Hancock Trails Club: 19th Annual Barnelopet Children’s Ski Race

  • Swedetown Trails Club: Creation of a Low-Snow Ski Loop and Multi-Use Trail Improvements 

Environmental Fund ($2,600 awarded):

  • Swedetown Trails Club: Swedetown Recreation Area Rain Garden 

  • Ahmeek Village Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department: Hazardous Materials Spill Response Equipment 

Houghton County Historical Preservation Fund ($450):

  • Painesdale Mine and Shaft, Inc.: Hard Hats & Head Lamps
