July Keweenaw Heartlands Project Updates: More details on closure of portion of Trail #3

Last month, The Nature Conservancy announced the closure of a small stretch of the snowmobile-only portion of Trail #3 heading up Brockway Mountain to ATV traffic for the summer. The trail is being closed to prevent further erosion and protect visitors and residents alike.

We ask residents and visitors to stay on the state designated ORV trails and to respect closed gates throughout the Keweenaw Heartlands. Gates are there to protect the natural resources beyond it and keep the public safe.

If you have any questions about the Trail #3 closure or any additional thoughts, questions, or concerns about the Keweenaw Heartlands project, you can email Keweenaw Peninsula Project Manager Julia Petersen at julia.petersen@tnc.org.

Keweenaw Heartlands meeting updates public on project progress

On Thursday, June 22, TNC held its second public meeting since purchasing the Keweenaw Heartlands in 2022 to update the community on several important stages of the project.

So much has happened since TNC representatives last met in person with the public in January, including hiring two new staff members, starting the ecological and cultural inventory of the land, and getting close to finalizing the Blueprint document for this project.

We appreciate everyone who came to the meeting and for their thoughtful questions. It was great to take some time to break down each of these important steps for the community and answer their questions.

Keweenaw Heartlands Blueprint moves to next phase

The public comment period for revisions to the first four sections of the Keweenaw Blueprint closed on June 20. We want to thank everyone who sent us their thoughts. The public’s feedback, along with input from the planning committee, will be used to finalize the Blueprint document this summer.
