Introducing the Marsin Wetlands Stewardship Fund
The Keweenaw Community Foundation (KCF) is proud to announce the establishment of the Marsin Wetlands Stewardship Fund, an endowed fund dedicated to supporting the long-term stewardship and care of the Marsin Nature Area’s 10-acre wetland habitat, owned by the Keweenaw Land Trust (KLT). This property is additionally protected by a conservation easement held by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE).
The Marsin Nature Area, located in Stanton Township, is a critical natural resource that provides habitat for diverse wildlife and preserves the ecological integrity of forested wetland habitats. The fund will ensure that the Keweenaw Land Trust, the designated property steward, has sustainable financial resources to maintain and protect the conservation values of this special area.
“The establishment of this fund underscores Keweenaw Community Foundation’s commitment to strengthening environmental stewardship efforts in the region. We are grateful to the Keweenaw Land Trust and the other conservation organizations for their work in our community to support these efforts,” said Robin Meneguzzo, Executive Director.
The Keweenaw Land Trust is a nonprofit organization committed to conserving the lands and waters of the Keweenaw Peninsula. Their efforts focus on protecting natural habitats, enhancing public access to outdoor spaces, and fostering a sense of stewardship and connection within the community. The Marsin Nature Area is one of many properties owned by KLT, which works in collaboration with local communities, landowners, and partners to protect the region’s unique natural resources and quality of life.
“This dedicated fund gives us greater capacity to steward the Marsin Nature Area, which is both ecologically significant and a special place to many people,” said Pat Toczydlowski, Interim Executive Director. “We are grateful that the Keweenaw Community Foundation can facilitate this fund and support our work.”
