Keweenaw Heartlands Project: August Updates
From the Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ free ORV days (Aug. 19-20) to the Copper Harbor Trails Fest over Labor Day weekend, there are all sorts of events happening this month and next to encourage residents and visitors to enjoy what the Keweenaw Peninsula has to offer, including the Keweenaw Heartlands. With that in mind, a friendly reminder to Leave No Trace: Take out what you take in when visiting the Keweenaw Heartlands to ensure the next visitor can enjoy the Heartlands as well. Please make sure even the smallest items are picked up to reduce impact on wildlife and the unique ecosystems that make Heartlands forests so special.
And as always, fires are not allowed on the Heartlands. As we have all been reminded by the smoke from the Canadian wildfires this summer, fighting fires in remote areas like the Heartlands is particularly difficult and dangerous and a small campfire can quickly get away and become a problem. Please keep fires to designated locations in campgrounds and not in the Heartlands.
If you run into locations on the Heartlands that need attention, we want to know. Please contact us at keweenaw@tnc.org.
