Youth Needs Survey

Conducted in early 2020, the Youth Needs Survey collected responses from students in grades 7-12 at local area schools. The survey garnered an incredible 54% response rate from local students and found that the largest areas of concern were Stress & Anxiety, Vaping, Depression, and Nicotine Use. In relation to additional programs and activities, students wished that there were more recreational and artistic activities available to them.

HistorY

In 1992, the trustees of the Community Foundation for Keweenaw and Houghton Counties (now Keweenaw Area Community Foundation) created the Youth Advisory Council in response to a challenge issued by the Kellogg Foundation. The Kellogg Foundation’s contribution of $500,000 to the Keweenaw Area Community Foundation formed the Kellogg Youth Endowment - to be managed for and by youth in Houghton and Keweenaw Counties.

Today, there are over 1,500 young people serving on 86 youth grant-making committees statewide. Endowment fund assets exceed $62 million and collectively award $1.5 million in grants per year. The KCF Kellogg Youth Endowment Fund group alone has granted nearly $300,000 in funds since its inception. The Keweenaw Community Foundation remains committed to involving youth in grant-making and leadership and continues to provide the opportunity for students to engage in philanthropy, leadership, and service as part of the YAC.
