Helping hands, loving heart, and A giving spirit

The mission of the Joe Freed Empowerment Fund is to empower persons with disabilities.

The Joe Freed Empowerment Fund was established in 2018 in honor of Joe Freed, a registered nurse who tirelessly worked to enhance the autonomy and dignity of people with mental and/or intellectual or developmental disabilities.

Too often individuals with mental and/or intellectual or developmental disabilities must surmount barriers like stigma, misinformation, lack of transportation, segregation, and isolation, all of which negatively impact freedom and dignity.

This fund supports efforts to empower members of this population in the Copper Country region to be a valued, thriving part of our community. Employment, ride-sharing, engaging in community activities, expanding social networks, and reducing stigma and misconceptions through public awareness are a few examples to empower these individuals.

Priority will be given to projects with community-wide impact.

Joseph D Freed was a nurse for Copper Country Mental Health, specializing in caring for individuals with disabilities. Helping hands, loving heart, and giving spirit were Joe’s core values. Until his unexpected death after a brief illness in 2018, he enjoyed celebrating everyone and encouraging them to live life to the fullest. He believed individuals who feel good about themselves thrive. He believed when people have freedom and are empowered, they can live life to the fullest. The mission of the Joe Freed Empowerment Fund is to empower persons with disabilities.
