The UP Wildlife Habitat Fund supports the Ruffed Grouse Society and American Woodcock Society (RGS & AWS). These groups work to unite conservationists in order to improve wildlife habitat and forest health for ruffed grouse, American woodcock, and ALL forest wildlife. They promote forest stewardship for our forests, our wildlife, and our future.

 

Current Projects - Habitat Work on the Ottawa

“Glinda” Timber Sale - 271 acres across Houghton and Ontonagon Counties, north of Trout Creek. Clear cutting for aspen regeneration. Sold, harvest to begin in December 2024/January 2025.

Adler Shearing - 40 acres originally planned in 2024, 38 acres were sheared in January 2024. Five sites between Paulding and Watersmeet. Aiming to contract an additional 40 acres for December 2024/January 2025.

Forest Openings of Ottawa National Forest - Seeking to increase the amount of upland openings​, about 90 acres have been identified. Involves clearing openings and planting shrubs and wildflowers.

Hunter Walking Trail Improvements​ - Improvements to the Ottawa Forest trail network, including new gates at trailheads and renovation of parking areas. Oak release and non-commercial timber removal are in early planning stages.

Breeding Bird/Drummer Surveys​ - Assisted with annual DNR drummer surveys, and organized a forest-wide golden-winged warbler survey. 8 singing males in breeding habitat identified across the Ottawa​ Forest. The second effort of this survey will begin in June 2024.

Spring Tree/Shrub Planting​ - Planting trees and shrubs along hunter walking trails. In process of planning a field day with volunteers, RGS staff, and USFS personnel​. Contact to get involved!
