Announcing the Esther Arnovits Weil Scholarship Fund

HANCOCK, MI – Thanks to the support of a generous donation, the Keweenaw Community Foundation announces the establishment of the Esther Arnovits Weil Scholarship Fund. This new fund will provide support to local high school graduates seeking higher education at any accredited college or university.

The Esther Arnovits Weil Scholarship Fund celebrates the life of Esther Arnovits Weil, who was born in Houghton in 1904, and attended Calumet High School. After high school, she went to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where she met her husband Herbert and studied to become a Social Worker. They later moved around for Herbert's work as a civil engineer, eventually landing in Omaha, NE in the mid-1940s.

Esther was a smart and caring person who loved learning and helping others. In Omaha, she either founded or joined a University of Chicago “Great Books” discussion group - reading the best books of philosophy, history, politics, and literature - which went on for nearly 30 years! She was active in the Jewish community and enjoyed cultural activities including frequenting the concert hall at the Joslyn Art Museum.

To honor Esther's memory, the scholarship will help high school graduates from Houghton and Keweenaw Counties with the cost of college. It's available starting in the spring of 2025 for students enrolled in degree programs at any accredited institution, including trade schools. This scholarship keeps Esther's giving spirit alive by supporting young people in their educational journey. It's a way to remember her kindness and inspire others to make a positive difference in their communities.

Additional donations are welcome to help support this new scholarship fund. Visit www.keweenawgives.org/esther-a-weil-scholarship to make your contribution and to learn more about the fund.
