Keweenaw County Emergency Operations Center Update

In partnership with the Keweenaw County Sheriff and The Nature Conservancy of Michigan, the Keweenaw Community Foundation continues to support the planning efforts for the future Keweenaw County Emergency Operations Center (KCEOC). The County received a $50,000 planning grant in early 2024 through the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity’s Office of Rural Prosperity. Since the award announcement, the planning committee has:

  • Conducted a public survey and public engagement session to collect resident and non-county resident feedback and input

  • Convened a 25-member stakeholder committee - comprised of diverse expertise from different emergency response personnel: law enforcement, fire, search and rescue, medical first responder, ambulance service, township and county leaders, regional planning, and more.

  • Began work on initial visioning and planning of the proposed future KCEOC

  • Developed a Request for Qualifications to bid out preliminary engineering services

This intensive community engagement project will continue throughout 2024 into 2025 as we work to plan for a future operations center within the county. We want to thank the community for their time and support for this important project and will continue to provide periodic updates as it progresses. For questions or inquiries about this project, please contact Sheriff Curt Pennala at sheriff@keweenawcountymi.gov or (906) 337-0528.
