June Keweenaw Heartlands Project Updates

Thanks to everyone who came out to the meet-and-greet in Eagle Harbor last month—what a warm welcome! The turnout was truly impressive, and I left inspired and energized by your care and concern for the Keweenaw. We have this in common, and as I immerse myself in the Keweenaw Heartlands Project, I look forward to seeing each of you again soon. That said, no worries if you couldn’t make it out! I am always just an email away if you have any thoughts, questions, or concerns about the Keweenaw Heartlands project. You can reach me at julia.petersen@tnc.org.

Julia Petersen, Keweenaw Heartlands project manager

Next Keweenaw Heartlands Public Meeting is June 22
The Nature Conservancy will provide the public an update on the Keweenaw Heartlands project on Thursday, June 22, from 6 – 8 p.m. The meeting will be held at The Vue at Harbor Haus, 77 Brockway Ave., Copper Harbor.

TNC will provide updates on the Keweenaw Heartlands Project, including the inventory project and trails and road maintenance plans, and answer questions you all may have about the property. All are welcome and reservations are not required.

New Blueprint section is available for public review and input
The draft of “Section 2: Methodology and Stakeholder Participation Process” for the Keweenaw Heartlands Blueprint is now available online. The public is encouraged to provide feedback on the document via email to keweenaw@tnc.org by June 20.

Section 2 summarizes the highly participatory planning process used by Rural Economic Success, LLC (RES) in the development of this Blueprint, including the formation of the planning committee and the steps taken to engage the public and solicit input.

TNC has also previously shared Section 1 (“Context”), Section 3 (“Principles for Management”) and Section 4 (“Principles for Governance”), which are still open for review. Please email your feedback to keweenaw@tnc.org, no later than June 20, to ensure your comments are included for the committee’s consideration.

Public input will inform the revision of these four sections of the final Keweenaw Blueprint, due
to be finalized this summer.
