A Community Celebration on Ice: Ahmeek Ice Rink Grand Opening Recap
On February 2, 2025, the Emil Aho Memorial Ice Rink in Ahmeek was filled with excitement and community spirit as residents gathered to celebrate the Grand Opening of the rink’s new boards. This milestone marks the culmination of the Outdoor Recreation for All – Build the Boards Project, a community-led fundraising effort that raised $100,000 to replace the rink’s deteriorating boards and ensure a safe, sustainable space for winter recreation.
The celebration kicked off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, officially unveiling the newly installed boards. Community members, donors, and volunteers who contributed to the project were recognized for their dedication in making this upgrade possible. Their names are proudly displayed on a commemorative plaque at the rink.
Following the ceremony, attendees laced up their skates and took to the ice, enjoying the first official skate on the newly revitalized rink. The cold winter air was no match for the warmth of free hot chocolate, and those who worked up an appetite on the ice could purchase fresh pizza from Jim’s Pizza.
“The installation of the new boards represents more than just an upgrade—it’s a testament to the power of community collaboration. Over 100 donors, including residents, businesses, and charitable foundations, came together to make this project a reality,” said Vienna Leonarduzzi, Director of Development and Communications at the Keweenaw Community Foundation.
This event was not just about celebrating a completed project—it was about celebrating the people who made it happen and the future generations who will benefit from it. Thank you to everyone who joined the community in celebrating this community-led effort!
