Meet Julia Petersen
The Nature Conservancy in Michigan is thrilled to announce the hiring of Julia Petersen as project manager of the Keweenaw Heartlands Project. Julia and her family reside in Atlantic Mine and have called the Keweenaw Peninsula home for nearly three years. A Michigan native, Petersen is currently finishing her PhD in Environmental and Energy Policy at Michigan Technological University. Prior to joining TNC, Julia has been everything from a planning specialist for the U.S. Army to a strategic planner for a large school district and, most recently, a director of conservation and education programs for the Zoological Society of Milwaukee. Her first official day on the job will be May 8.
TNC seeking community input on Keweenaw Heartlands Blueprint
A portion of the Keweenaw Heartlands Blueprint is online and available for the community to review. The section available for public review outlines the principles and values for managing the more than 32,000 acres of land near the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula. The Blueprint will be finalized this summer. Additional sections will be made available for community review and input as they are drafted. You can share your thoughts via email at keweenaw@tnc.org.
Keweenaw Heartlands Inventory Underway
An inventory of the many significant aspects of the Keweenaw Heartlands began in April. The inventory will include biological, cultural, historic, forest and carbon, and infrastructure assessments of the property. In the end, the inventory will help inform the future management, protection, and use of resources on the land and guide future recreational opportunities, sustainable forestry, and infrastructure needs. Throughout the spring, TNC will be conducting on the ground field assessments, and utilizing existing data from several sources, including the public. We’d love your help; you can contribute to the inventory using this form.
