10/17/23 | October Keweenaw Heartlands Updates

The final section of the Blueprint for the Keweenaw Heartlands, titled Section 6: Ongoing and Future Work, is now available for public review. The document can be viewed here. Those interested in providing feedback can send it to keweenaw@tnc.org. The deadline for feedback is Wednesday, Oct. 25.

This section of the Blueprint addresses some of the most important needs identified by the community and refined by the 17-member Keweenaw Heartlands Planning Committee, The Nature Conservancy (TNC), and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The section first outlines the specific work necessary to successfully transition a large portion of the Heartlands to local ownership, governance, and management. The section then addresses work consistently identified as next steps for addressing critical community challenges concerning infrastructure, affordable workforce and family housing, public safety, and more. These next steps are summarized as recommendations sourced from the Heartlands public engagement process, and if acted on, could impact the region positively for years to come.

The public feedback period has passed for the first four sections of the Blueprint. They can be viewed here. Section 5: Recommend Governance Structure, available here, is still available for public comment through Wednesday, Oct. 25.

Seventy-three miles of primary and secondary roads or trails and 95 culverts run throughout the Keweenaw Heartlands. These roads, trails, and culverts are all managed by TNC. Of the 73 miles of primary and secondary roads/trails, 29 miles are also maintained as ORV trails and 47.5 miles are maintained as snowmobile trails. We’re proud to partner with the Keweenaw ATV Club and Keweenaw Snowmobile Club to keep these trails in tip-top shape!
