Mildred “Millie” Pyorala Scholarship

The Mildred "Millie" Pyorala Scholarship was established in 2024 by retired Chassell Schools educator and Calumet High School alumna Mildred Pyorala to support the next generation of learners and educators.

Mildred "Millie" Pyorala devoted over 30 years to teaching at Chassell High School, embodying her lifelong passion for education and academic growth. Her dedication to her students and community inspired her to establish this scholarship, supporting students' pursuit of their dreams of higher education. Through this fund, Millie's love for learning and her commitment to nurturing future educators and leaders will continue to make a lasting impact, empowering young minds to achieve their goals and build brighter futures.

Scholarship Details
The Mildred "Millie" Pyorala Scholarship awards $2,000 annually to one graduating senior from Chassell High School. Preference will be given to students who plan to pursue degrees in education or careers in teaching. If no applicants meet this criterion, consideration will be given to students pursuing other fields of study, including trade school programs.

Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be graduating seniors at Chassell High School.

  • Demonstrate an intention to pursue a degree in education or teaching.

    • Other academic or trade programs will be considered if no such applicants are available.

Award Amount
One scholarship of $2,000 will be awarded annually.

Application Process
Scholarship applications are reviewed by an advisory committee comprised of educators and staff. This committee makes recommendations to the Keweenaw Community Foundation's Board of Directors for final approval. The first scholarship will be awarded in Spring 2025.
