Keweenaw Land Trust
The Voice for Protection of Land and Water in the Western Upper Peninsula
The Keweenaw Land Trust (KLT) is a community partner protecting land, water, and quality of life through conservation, stewardship and education. KLT was founded as a non-profit charitable organization in 1996 by local residents with a vision and love for the Copper Country. KLT applies effective strategies to protect and restore natural areas, watersheds, heritage lands, traditional farms, forests and family lands that enhance our quality of life and foster personal connections to the Keweenaw for generations to come.
KLT seeks to build a community in which people recognize native plants and animals by name, learn about our land and water from those who lived here before us, enjoy being outside in all seasons, weather and even darkness, and know how to use resources wisely and to treat land and water with respect.
(Hungarian Falls) – KLT empowers landowners and citizens to create a landscape that is forever beautiful, healthy and diverse.
KLT works with partners to offer outdoor activities and learning experiences with a goal of strengthening connections between people and the natural world.
We strive to create opportunities for public access and low-impact recreation and to balance protection of natural resources with sustainable local economies across the Western Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Our land conservation program involves working with willing landowners to create permanent protection agreements for private lands, known as conservation easements, as well as to establish public nature preserves through land purchases and donations.
