The Great Start Early Childhood Fund is a Field of Interest Fund supporting early childhood programs and services in Baraga, Houghton, and Keweenaw Counties. Focused on children from pre-birth through age eight and their families, this fund provides essential resources and programs to build a strong foundation, reflecting our community’s commitment to its youngest members.

 
 

Purpose of the Fund

The Great Start Early Childhood Fund was created to:

  • Promote positive early childhood experiences for all children in the Copper Country. 

  • Enhance quality, accessibility, and inclusive practices in early childhood programs and services.

  • Highlight the importance of early brain development, a critical period for lifelong success.

  • Support families by providing resources and services essential for children’s growth.

This fund represents a long-term commitment to sustaining early childhood programs and services for future generations.

What the Fund Supports

The Great Start Early Childhood Fund prioritizes projects that:

  • Improve the quality and accessibility of early childhood care and education programs.

  • Emphasize family leadership and engagement.

  • Support children’s social-emotional and physical health.

  • Builds community collaboration and partnership.

  • Align with Michigan’s Early Childhood Outcomes:

    • Children are born healthy.

    • Children are healthy, thriving, and developmentally on track.

    • Children are ready for school at the time of school entry.

    • Children are reading proficiently by the end of 3rd grade, ensuring success in 4th grade and beyond.

Eligibility for Funding

Applications for funding will open in the spring of 2025. Eligible applicants include:

  • Registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations

  • Governmental units

  • Educational or religious institutions
