Esther Arnovits Weil Scholarship

The Esther Arnovits Weil Scholarship pays tribute to Esther's lifelong love for learning, community, and family. This scholarship supports high school graduates from Houghton and Keweenaw Counties in pursuing higher education.

The Esther Arnovits Weil Scholarship Fund celebrates the life of Esther Arnovits Weil, who was born in Houghton in 1904, and attended Calumet High School. After high school, she enrolled in the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where she met her husband Herbert. They later moved around for Herbert's work as a civil engineer, eventually landing in Omaha, NE in the mid-1940s.

Esther was a smart and caring person who loved learning and helping others. In Omaha, she either founded or joined a University of Chicago “Great Books” discussion group - reading the best books of philosophy, history, politics, and literature - which went on for nearly 30 years! She was active in the Jewish community and enjoyed cultural activities including frequenting the concert hall at the Joslyn Art Museum.

To honor Esther's memory, the scholarship will help high school graduates from Houghton and Keweenaw Counties with the cost of college. It's available starting in the spring of 2025 for students enrolled in degree programs at any accredited institution, including trade schools. This scholarship keeps Esther's giving spirit alive by supporting young people in their educational journey. It's a way to remember her kindness and inspire others to make a positive difference in their communities.
