The Copper Harbor Trails Club (CHTC) is a non-profit organization that advocates, develops, and maintains trails and land for human-powered activities in and connecting to Copper Harbor. The Copper Harbor Trails Club’s KCF endowment provides long-term stewardship support to care for the trails under their management. CHTC hires professional trail builders to construct new trails on the scenic terrain across the Keweenaw’s northern reaches while hundreds of volunteers put in countless hours to clear trail each spring, host competitive races and fun events, and make our community a hub for outdoor recreation.

Nestled in the tip of the Keweenaw, the Copper Harbor Trails are Michigan’s northernmost ride center and one of the top trail destinations in the upper Midwest. The trails serve as a major tourist draw to Copper Harbor, and trail counters in 2015 showed over 20,000 people passed by the main Copper Harbor trailhead. Since then, many miles of trail have been built and CHTC’s events have grown by leaps and bounds. The terrain found on the Copper Harbor Trails vary from rugged shoreline at High Rock Bay to the sweeping vistas atop Brockway Mountain, with wild forests, deep gorges, beautiful rivers, and endless miles of solitude available free of charge to both local and visiting riders.

Great trails don’t happen by accident. For well over two decades volunteers from our community have come together to build and maintain exciting non-motorized trails for everyone to enjoy. What started as a fun hobby for a few local pioneers now attracts tens of thousands of people to the Keweenaw, helping to support our economy and boosting quality of life for those who live and work here. We are proud to have some of the best mountain bike trails in the Midwest and appreciate the support that our community has provided over the years to keep the dream alive. Ride on!

Currently, the CHTC is developing the Keweenaw Point Trail: an exciting project to construct a 30+ mile looped trail around the rugged backcountry of the Keweenaw Peninsula. As of spring 2019, the trail takes users from Copper Harbor to High Rock Bay. With the assistance of the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund, Recreational Trails Program, private donors, and the Keweenaw Community Foundation, work is set to begin on the third and final phase of the trail, opening up stunning new terrain and allowing trail users to travel to Keweenaw Point, Keystone Bay, and the Montreal River on dedicated singletrack trail. We hope to begin construction of this 15-mile addition in 2020. Alongside this signature trail, CHTC is continually updating and adding on to our existing network closer to Copper Harbor.
