Meet the Staff
Jim Vivian - Executive Director
Why KCF: I am a fifth-generation resident of Houghton and Keweenaw counties, and I come from a strong family tradition of supporting the community that has supported our family. Being involved with the Keweenaw Community Foundation is important to me because of the positive influence and impact we have on the quality of our community.
Passions: In the spring and summer, I can be found navigating boats powered by motor, sail, and paddle in the Great Lakes and other waters of North America. In the Fall and winter, I can be found enjoying the Keweenaw outdoors in all its glory.
Lisa Broemer - Office Manager
Why KCF: After learning what the Foundation does for the community, I knew I wanted to be a part of this team. Every day, I leave the office with the satisfaction that I helped make a difference, maybe in a small way, maybe in a big way, maybe for an individual, maybe for a group of people—big or small, being a part of a team that “inspires giving that invests in our community’s quality of life” is exactly where I want to be.
Passions: Health and happiness. I am a people person—a social butterfly so to speak. Whether with my family, friends, or at community events meeting new people, I always want to see smiles and hear laughter. I try to promote healthy living within my community as well as my own household and family.
Laura Smyth - Head of Marketing & Communications
Why KCF: Community is one of the most important concerns in my life, so I am pleased to have the opportunity to work with the Keweenaw Community Foundation. Since relocating to the Keweenaw from the New York metro area, I have sought out projects and organizations that help me better understand the people, history, and challenges of this beautiful place. My role at KCF allows me to contribute in a meaningful way to the well-being of my adopted home.
Passions: I am a poet and a graphic artist. Other passions include a deep love for animals and nature.
Brooke Powell - Marketing & Design Intern
Why KCF: I have always been interested in nonprofit work. KCF, for me, was the perfect fit because not only do I get to be a part of a great team, but I also become more aware of a great community. As a student, this is so important to me because—even though I am far from home—it helps to keep me grounded.
Passions: Photography, playing the piano, and designing crazy fun things!
