A Newly Established Community Wellness and Outdoor Recreation Fund is Available

September 19, 2017

Hancock, Michigan— Keweenaw Community Foundation (KCF) along with Portage Health Foundation (PHF) is pleased to announce the availability of a newly established Portage Health Foundation Community Wellness and Outdoor Recreation fund. This fund was established with the intention that it will help influence and financially support the outdoor recreational needs of the community.

“With KCF and PHF working together it creates opportunity for matching funds, collaborative efforts, and grant projects that will help get our community members outdoors and active.” said Kevin Store, Executive Director of the Portage Health Foundation. “Although this type of support falls outside our core areas of emphasis, we recognize the need in our community to help support and sustain outdoor recreation. This fund, along with additional support we will provide to it, will be a good first step in helping those efforts.”

The fund will be maintained and managed by KCF and will put to use the available $60,000 this granting cycle that would help support non-profits in Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon counties.

The primary purpose of the Portage Health Community Wellness and Outdoor Recreation fund will be to provide financial assistance and grant awards in support of focused initiatives, programs, or projects that influence or support individual physical activity and healthy nutrition. This fund will give the community the chance to expand, create, or sustain outdoor recreational resources throughout Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon counties. It will also provide greater access and more choices for the identified community members to utilize these resources as part of their individual and collective health pursuits and enjoyment. Specific terms for the fund will come from a yearly granting process as part of the Request for Proposal (RFP) process.

Keweenaw Community Foundation’s mission is to inspire giving that invests in our community’s quality of life. This fund will help support that mission by encouraging organizations to work together to ensure the best quality of life and health for our community members.

According to Jim Vivian, Executive Director of the Keweenaw Community Foundation, an advisory board has been appointed and work is underway to begin drafting up the language for the first request for proposals (RFP) which will open on October 2nd.

Keweenaw Community Foundation will be releasing more information to the public as the announcement of the forthcoming RFP is announced.
